* Start times depend on the options below.
We can extend this Trek to be 3 days / 3 nights by stopping on day 2 in the forest and making camp for the night.
Huay Makay Soam, also known as Tomato Village, is 30km from Mae Hong Son and 2000 metres up in the mountains, just a few kms from the border with Burma. Ten and Ben live in Tomato Village and Trek 1 starts here.
Leaving Mae Hong Son at 9am, you will travel by taxi to Tomato Village. The road is up through the mountains and takes about 2 hours. Once in the village the yellow taxi will drop you at Ben and Ten's house around 11am. You can have tea and coffee with Ben and Ten before setting off, or if you prefer you can have an early lunch and then go trekking.
Travel to Tomato Village the day before and stay at Ben and Ten's house overnight. Transport from Mae Hong Son leaves at 3pm and arrives in Tomato Village around 5pm. Ten and Ben will also provide dinner with tea and coffee for you. The following morning after breakfast you will start trekking. The overnight stay with dinner and breakfast included is 100 Baht per person.
From Huay Makay Soam we walk through the forest to Hou Pho , a Red Karen village, approx 4 hrs walk. Then we head down hill to Mick Sa Pae, another Red Karen village where we can stay overnight and have dinner. The following day (Day 2) we take a different route back to Tomato Village, stopping for lunch in the forest. Dinner will provided that evening and you will stay in Tomato Village overnight.
To extend the trek, we can stay overnight in the forest on Day two and make a camp, using bamboo to build a shelter and banana leaves for the roof. With a camp fire and wild food, you'll enjoy the experience of sleeping outside in the forest and have time to relax and enjoy your natural surroundings.
Hill Tribe village accommodation in the village will be basic and you may be sleeping on bamboo or floor mats. Please bring a sleeping mat, sleeping bag and mosquito net, as these are not provided.
If the group is larger ( 4+ people) we will have a porter/s with us to help carry food and supplies. You will be expected to carry your own bag or rucksack. However if you would prefer not to do this then we can arrange a porter for you, at additional cost.
We will provide two hot meals a day for lunch and dinner, plus a cold continental style breakfast. Water (boiled), tea and coffee are included. You have the choice of Burmese food (typically spicy), Thai food or Western food, please let us know in advance if you have any specific requirements (ie vegetarian, vegan). You may want to bring other snacks, fruit or drinks with you, but please consider the weight as you have to carry it! In the forest and jungle there are fruits and wild food that we can pick, mushrooms, nuts etc.
Please read our section on the hill tribes before you go to ensure that you are respectful to their ways and customs. When staying in the hill tribe villages overnight, 2 blankets are provided, extra blankets are available at additional cost.
